WPF URGES INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO STEP UP SUPPORT AS FAMINE LOOMS IN SUDAN.
The World Food Program (WFP) has called for urgent international support for Sudan, where a civil war has been ongoing since 2023.
Speaking at a UN press briefing in Geneva, WFP's Sudan representative, Laurent Bukera, warned that famine is looming in several areas and humanitarian operations are at risk due to severe funding shortfalls.
Bukera revealed that the WFP has reached 4 million people monthly with food aid, nearly four times more than at the beginning of 2024, but operations are constrained, noting that essential items like oil and pulses have been removed from food baskets due to lack of resources.
He further said that the WFP urgently needs over $500 million for emergency food and cash assistance.
Condemning escalating attacks on humanitarian personnel and emphasized that peace is the ultimate solution, he urged the international community to stand with the Sudanese people as they rebuild their lives and communities after two years of devastating conflict.
