The immediate past president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, has called for strong and independent unions to protect workers' rights.
Wabba made the call at the 42nd National Union of Food Beverages and Tobacco Employees(NUFBTE)’s National Executive Council (NEC)’meeting on Sunday in Abuja, highlighting the importance of unions generating revenue through investments, rather than relying solely on check-off dues.
He also cited examples of global unions that have successfully invested workers' funds, such as the Local Government Union in Canada, which has invested in the power sector.
The former NLC president urged the NUFBTE to build a strong union that can defend workers' rights and secure their income through investments.
He also encouraged NUFBTE members to support their leadership and promote peace and tranquility within the union.
