US President Donald Trump has congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevado on his election as Pope Leo XIV.

Being the first American to hold the position. Trump, in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressed his delight excitement, describing the election as a “great honor" for the United States.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Trump said he looks forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV, as “it will be a very meaningful moment”, with suggestions of potential diplomatic efforts between the US and the Vatican under the new papacy.
