The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the arrest of a notorious gunrunner and kidnap kingpin, Buhari Umar, who had been terrorizing communities across several states.
This was disclosed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, during a media briefing held in Abuja on Thursday.
Additionally, the troops also busted a five-member kidnapping syndicate in Nasarawa State.
Kangye said the military also neutralized several members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), including a high-profile commander, Nkwachi Eze, accused of orchestrating multiple attacks and kidnappings in the South-East.
He added that 173 kidnapped victims were rescued, while 204 terrorists and their family members surrendered.
In the Niger Delta region, Kangye disclosed that Operation Delta Safe dealt a significant blow to illegal oil refining activities, thwarting thefts valued at over ₦1.93 billion.
He noted that the troops recovered large quantities of stolen crude oil and refined products, destroyed illegal refining sites, and seized various equipment and vehicles.
