NOA LAUNCHES COMMUNITY SENSITISATION ON DIPHTHERIA IN ENUGU.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Enugu State has launched a statewide community sensitization campaign in response to a recent outbreak of diphtheria.
The state Director, Clara Nwachukwu, disclosed that a confirmed case was recorded in March 2025 involving a six-year-old girl who was treated at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital.
He noted that diphtheria is a highly contagious but vaccine-preventable disease which spreads through direct contact or via respiratory droplets in the air, and children under five years are especially vulnerable to severe complications, while the 5-14-year-old age group often bears the greatest disease burden.
Nwachukwu said the NOA has deployed Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers across the 17 local government areas to raise awareness about diphtheria symptoms, the importance of immunization, and the need for early presentation at healthcare facilities.
