A Nigerian software programmer, Sapphire Egemasi, known as the "Tech Queen," has been arrested by the FBI for her alleged involvement in a high-level transnational cyber fraud ring.
Egemasi, who has been accused of creating fake websites to steal employee credentials and siphon millions from government institutions in the US, allegedly played a critical role in a sophisticated cybercrime network led by Ghanaian national, Samuel Kwadwo Osei.
According to court documents, Egemasi, whose programming expertise was used to create convincing fake websites mimicking legitimate portals of US government agencies, with the group reportedly targeting municipal institutions, including the city government of Kentucky, successfully redirecting $965,000 and $330,000 into fraudulent bank accounts.
If convicted, Egemasi will face up to 20 years in prison, hefty financial penalties, and potential deportation.
