An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State has left five children injured, with one of them losing a hand.

The explosion was said to have occurred when the children, comprising four males and one female, unknowingly tampered with IED devices hidden near a construction site at the New Mafa Central Mosque.

A combined team from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Unit, police, and Civilian Joint Task Force swiftly responded to the incident, cordoning off the scene and searching for secondary devices.

Four of the victims were referred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment, while one victim with minor injuries was treated and discharged at Mafa General Hospital.

The team also conducted Explosive Ordinance Risk Education for children and community members in Mafa to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents.
