The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Guterres, in his statement, emphasized the importance of strong voices supporting peace, social justice, human dignity, and compassion during global challenges.
He expressed eagerness to continue cooperation between the United Nations and the Holy See to promote solidarity and a just, sustainable world.
Guterres further said that he looks forward to building on the long-standing partnership between the UN and the Holy See, which was recently strengthened by Pope Francis.
In the same vein, world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, among others, have also congratulated Pope Leo XIV, expressing hope for more diplomatic efforts and relations.
