The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised market women in Akwa Ibom to clear drains and properly dispose waste to prevent flood disasters.
NEMA's Head of Operations, Mmandu Aisueni, who gave the advice during a sensitization rally in Uyo, warning against indiscriminate waste disposal and its impact on the environment.
Aisueni, who was represented by a Principal Accountant from the agency, Awoji Augustine, said that the rally was in collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
She noted that Akwa Ibom is among states predicted to record heavy rainfall, with risks of flooding and cholera outbreaks.
The agency distributed handbills and placards with messages promoting proper waste management and environmental cleanliness.
Also speaking, the state Coordinator of NESREA, Deborah Dasimaka, expressed concern over the use of non-biodegradable polythene bags, advocating for alternative policies to curb plastic waste and reduce environmental nuisance.
