Tinubu sacks top government official, appoints replacement
President Bola Tinubu has removed Professor Segun Ajiboye as Chief Executive/Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Ajiboye was re-appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari for a five-year term.
His tenure was scheduled to end in September 2026.
But Tinubu has now appointed Mrs Ronke Soyombo as the new Registrar and Chief Executive of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Soyombo, who served as the Senior Special Adviser on Education, Science and Technology to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, will now lead the federal agency responsible for regulating the teaching profession in Nigeria.
Her appointment was made official last week during a ceremony in Abuja, where the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, presented her with the letter.
According to sources familiar with the development, she resumed duties on Monday at the TRCN headquarters.
Before this new role, Soyombo was in her second term as the governor’s adviser, having been first appointed in 2019.
She also briefly took on the position of Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in the state, where she simultaneously headed both the Teaching Service Commission and the Universal Basic Education Board in an acting capacity.
With more than three decades of experience in the education sector, Soyombo has worked in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
She holds a degree in Chemistry Education from the University of Lagos and a law degree from London Guildhall University.
She also earned a Microsoft certification in 1997.
Soyombo is expected to serve a five-year term in her new position.
