The World Bank has revealed that about 75.5% of rural Nigerians live below the poverty line, highlighting deepening hardship in the country's hinterlands, noting that economic stagnation, high inflation, and insecurity have worsened living conditions.
The World Bank disclosed this in its latest report, noting that 41.3% of urban residents are affected, which underscores the rural-urban divide, adding that Nigeria's poverty rate has risen significantly, with over 54% of Nigerians projected to be living in poverty, and notable regional disparities, as poverty rates in northern zones stand at 46.5%, compared to 13.5% in southern zones and the country's prosperity gap estimated at 10.2, being higher than most peers.
The World Bank has, therefore, called for urgent policy action to shield vulnerable groups from inflationary shocks and drive job creation, while stressing the need for sustained economic growth and social protection to address the poverty crisis, as millions of Nigerians are suffering.
