The UN Development Programme, Global Environment Facility, Small Grants Programme (UNDP GEF SGP) has called on communities to raise awareness and take proactive measures to prevent flood-related disasters.
The National Coordinator of the UNDP GEF SGP, Ibironke Olubamise, made the call on Sunday in Abuja, emphasizing the importance of communities to be vigilant and prepared for potential flooding.
Olubamise suggested that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) could support communities by providing first aid kits and exploring traditional knowledge and practices to manage heavy rainfall.
She also recommended that communities develop clear evacuation plans, stockpile food, and stay informed through radio updates.
The National Coordinator also warned of potential health risks after flooding, such as waterborne diseases, and urged Nigerians to ensure the rainy season doesn't lead to chaos and destruction.
She further called on relevant agencies to intensify awareness campaigns to keep citizens informed about weather forecasts and early warnings.
