President Bola Tinubu has called for strict enforcement of the Child Rights Act and other child protection laws to safeguard Nigerian children.
The president made the call during the inauguration of the National Action Plan on Ending Violence Against Children in Nigeria, in Abuja where he was represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
President Tinubu emphasized the need for concrete action to protect children from violence and exploitation, highlighting his administration's efforts, including establishing a Child Protection and Development Agency, introducing the Universal Child Grant, and creating a National Child Protection Database and Child Well-being Index.
He emphasized that legislation alone is not enough; it's the will behind those laws and the systems that enforce them that make a difference.
The president revealed that key institutions have been equipped with necessary training and resources to lead efforts to protect Nigerian children.
The President's call to action comes as Nigeria hosts a regional meeting of Africa's Pathfinder Countries under the Global Alliance on Ending Violence Against Children to implement commitments made during the First Global Ministerial Conference in Bogotá.
Earlier, UN Special Representative on Violence Against Children, urged African leaders to take concrete action beyond verbal commitments to protect children.
