The Nigerian Senate has passed two key Tax Reform Bills, aiming to overhaul the country's tax laws.
The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, both seeking to improve tax collection, accountability, and compliance, were passed on Wednesday after consideration and adoption of recommendations from the Senate Committee on Finance led by Senator Sani Musa, who worked with stakeholders to address concerns and disagreements.
Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, congratulated the Senate, the Finance Committee, and the Elders Committee for their leadership and wisdom in passing the bills.
He noted that there were initially disagreements and rancour. However, the Senate stood firm, establishing the Elders Committee to address contentious areas and consult various stakeholders.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed optimism that the new tax laws would revolutionize tax collection nationwide, benefiting all Nigerians, adding that the remaining two bills will be considered in plenary on Thursday.
