The Nigerian Senate has passed an amendment to the 2024 South-East Development Commission Act.
The bill, which was presented during plenary on Wednesday by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, aims to reconcile gaps in the Act regarding the appointment of executive directors, ensuring uniformity and equality.
The amendment bill received accelerated passage, going through first and second readings after the Senate suspended rule 7(1).
Bamidele noted that the South-East Commission was inadvertently omitted from previous development commission amendment bills, and the Senate had resolved to ensure uniformity across regions.
The Senate passed the amended bill after a clause-by-clause consideration in a move that is expected to promote development and equality in the South-East region, aligning with other development commissions in the country.
