REP COMMITTEE SEEKS LEGAL FRAMEWORK, STANDARDS FOR RENEWAL ENERGY SECTOR.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, Afam Ogene, has called for urgent legislative action to regulate Nigeria's renewable energy sector.
Ogene made the call at the sidelines of the First Legislative Conference and Expo on Renewable Energy in Lagos, stressing the need for standards, proper regulation, and targeted incentives to structure the sector and attract investment.
Expressing concerns about the lack of enforced quality standards for solar panels and equipment, which could lead to substandard products flooding the market, he called for a coordinated national framework, legislation, and incentives to promote private-sector participation and long-term investment security.
The Chairman also emphasized the importance of balancing Nigeria's reliance on fossil fuels with its participation in global climate goals, suggesting a gradual transition to renewable energy.
He further proposed initiatives like clean cooking, public awareness campaigns, and behavior-based incentives to promote sustainable renewable energy practices.
