Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for urgent action to address Nigeria's worsening poverty situation.
Citing a World Bank report, the former governor of Anambra State, who lamented in a post on X that rural poverty has risen to over 75% and urban poverty to 41.3%, attributed this to years of misplaced priorities, stressing the need for investment in critical sectors like health, education, and poverty alleviation.
Obi urged the government to focus on legacy projects that can transform the nation, such as human capital development, quality education, and healthcare.
He also advocated for supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to create jobs and lift people out of poverty which he said, has more than doubled since 2018/2019, stressing that it has become a national emergency requiring immediate attention and action from all levels of government.
