The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to scale up the deployment of groyne technology to combat coastal erosion along its 180kilometer shoreline.
The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, announced this during a press briefing, citing the technology's effectiveness in other parts of the world, including the Netherlands.
The commissioner said the project is estimated to cost over ₦3 trillion, prompting the government to seek strategic collaborations with the Federal Government and private sector.
Alebiosu stressed the need for a robust partnership to preserve the shoreline, prevent further erosion, and protect coastal communities.
He added that the state government is exploring a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework to finance and implement large-scale groyne deployment, with coastal protection infrastructure, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's agenda to secure lives, protect assets, and unlock the economic potential of Lagos' waterfronts.
