The Nigerian Navy has established a Special Operations Command in Makurdi, Benue State, to enhance security in the Middle Belt region.
The Chief of Policy and Plans (Navy), Rear Adiral Ibrahim Dewu, announced during a news conference, that the command, which will be situated on the North Bank of the River Benue, will include special operations personnel, such as Navy Marines, Special Boat Service, and Blue Sea Operations.
Dewu said the Navy has also taken delivery of three new patrol vessels, which will improve its presence at sea, adding that three Agusta Westland 109 Trekker helicopters will be commissioned, thereby bringing the total number of helicopters to 14, to enhance the Navy's maritime security operations.
The Nigerian Navy is set to commemorate its 69th anniversary with various activities, including the commissioning of the new vessels and helicopters.
The celebrations will feature a Navy Week with events such as medical outreach, sailing competitions, and an open ship day, with the Navy's new Special Operations Command and acquired assets expected to boost its capabilities in maintaining maritime security and combating security challenges in the region.
