The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Adamu, has expressed concern over the prevalence of corruption at the local government level.
Speaking at an engagement with the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) in Abuja, Adamu, who emphasized that corruption at this level undermines development, erodes public trust, and hinders national progress, identified specific corrupt practices, including diversion of funds, ghost worker syndicates, inflated contracts, and misappropriation of internally generated revenues.
The ICPC boss stressed the need for citizen participation in demanding accountability from local government officials, including budget monitoring and reporting corrupt practices.
He called for innovative approaches to empower citizens and sensitize communities on their rights and responsibilities, fostering a culture that resists corruption.
Adamu also acknowledged challenges faced by local government officials and stressed the importance of building a resilient system that equips officials with the necessary tools and training to uphold ethical conduct.
