First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called on state governments to adopt community-based interventions to address substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
Tinubu made the call at a training workshop organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for the Nigeria Governors' Spouses Forum (NGSF).
The first lady, who was represented by the wife of the Deputy Senate President, Laila Barau, emphasized that this approach aligns with the National Drug Control Master Plan's goals.
She stressed the need for a coordinated response to the growing crisis, which affects the health, safety, and future of children, while urging participants to utilize the training to develop evidence-based solutions and support marginalized populations.
In his remarks, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, highlighted the impact of drug abuse on society, emphasizing the need for inclusive, community-centered strategies.
Marwa noted that the crisis obstructs societal progress and requires urgent attention, hence the need to find pragmatic solutions to address the human toll of drug abuse.
