The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) says it is working with Meta to resolve their ongoing dispute over data breach allegations.
The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, stated this on Tuesday at a one-day intensive workshop for data protection officers (DPOs) in Abuja.
Olatunji said the commission is exploring dialogue and collaboration to resolve the issue which began when the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) imposed a $220 million fine on Meta for multiple data privacy violations, after which the former threatened to appeal and potentially shut down its Nigerian operations after the fine was upheld.
He reiterated the NDPC’s commitment to resolving the issue, noting that a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Mastercard to strengthen data protection capacity in Nigeria.
Olatunji also expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved through the commission's approach of engaging organizations and seeking amicable solutions.
