The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council has ordered the demolition of over 10 duplexes built on a green area in Wumba District, near Apo in Abuja.
The Coordinator of the Council, Felix Obuah, issued the order during an inspection of the area, noting that these structures were constructed without authorization or allocation, thereby violating the Abuja Master Plan.
Obuah stated that despite multiple stop-work orders and warnings from the Department of Development Control, the developer ignored the directives.
He, therefore, said that the properties would be demolished within 48 hours, stressing that the FCT Administration would not tolerate illegal developments, especially on environmentally designated areas.
Also speaking, the Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, confirmed that no approval was granted for the construction, while the Director of Parks and Recreation, Chidemelu Echee, condemned the destruction of green spaces, citing the importance of preserving natural ecosystems for sustainable living.
For his part, the Director of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Osilama Braimah, also warned that removing green spaces leads to environmental degradation, including increased urban heat and flooding.
