The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new president.

Piwuna, who is also the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke.

The election took place at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union in Benin.

Piwuna, who won the election against against Prof. Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, assumes office amidst speculations of industrial action due to unresolved issues, including the sharing formula for Earned Academic Allowances and brain drain in Nigerian universities.

The new president faces challenges in addressing these issues and potentially leading the union in negotiations with the government.
